After a long absence, school’s rugby returned to Coláiste Muire last year in the form of an under 16 squad. The first season saw Coláiste Muire play three friendlies, away to Ballincollig, Bandon Grammar and Midleton College. The school came away with one victory, one draw and one defeat for their first season.
Onto the 2009 / 2010 season, with Crosshaven meeting Christians and Bandon in pre-season friendlies before being defeated by Midleton in the Mungret Shield.
With the foundations set, Colaiste Muire decided to move forward into competitive rugby with an entry into the Munster wide King Cup competition.  A knock out competition featuring twenty teams from across the province, the King Cup is a prestigious Junior Rugby championship and was viewed as a major step forward for Crosshaven.

The opening match was played away to Waterpark College in Waterford, previous winners of the Cup.  On a cold, wet and windy day in January, Colaiste Muire were the victors by 12 points to ten.
Round two saw Mallow’s Patrician Academy, the King Cup favourites for this season, visit Colaiste Muire.  The match was played at Crosshaven RFC’s grounds at Myrtleville Cross and saw the home side win by the narrowest of margins, with the 15-14 victory secured in the last kick of the match!
On then to the quarter final, a local derby away to Carrigaline Community School.  Colaiste Muire had a strong showing here to come away with a 27-12 win, despite a second half rally by the home side.
I.S Killorglin travelled to Myrtleville Cross for the semi final, which saw Colaiste Muire come away with a 19-13 victory in what was a hugely entertaining display of vintage rugby from both sides.  On then to the final.
March 26th, high noon on a beautiful spring day at Charleville RFC’s ground in North Cork.  Colaiste Muire travelled to meet Rice College from Ennis in Co Clare.  Both sides arrived with sizable contingents of supporters, adding to the atmosphere of the occasion.  Crosshaven elected to receive the kick off from Rice College and immediately found themselves under pressure from a knock on.  For the next thirty minutes, the Colaiste Muire team defended against continuous pressure from Rice College.  Apart from two brief forays into opposition territory, Colaiste Muire spent the first half defending their line with Rice College using the wind advantage to some effect.  The Colaiste Muire defence was magnificent, with a very high tackle count, particularly from flanker Jeremy Rooney.  Despite their best efforts, however, Rice College had to settle for 3-0 lead at half time, having converted one penalty.
Colaiste Muire started strongly in the second half, using the wind to pin Rice College back in their own half.  The pressure paid off early in the half, with scrum half Donal Kiely getting over the in the corner after a series of rucks on the goal line.  Colaiste Muire now started to settle into their attacking game, moving the ball wide at every opportunity and kicking the ball into the Rice College 22 with great effect.  With Colaiste Muire controlling the pace of the game, the pressure paid of again, this time with centre James Twomey touching down in the corner from one of his trademark runs, set up by the ball passing through the hands of almost every member of the team!  Colaiste Muire were now leading by 10-3 and needed to push harder to increase to margin.  Rice College did not stop and launched a sustained assault on the Crosshaven line which culminated in a touchdown in the corner.  Having failed to convert, Rice College once again came back at Coláiste Muire but the defence held strong.  Crosshaven once again demonstrated their dominance with a third try under the posts from fullback Evan Maverly, who took a beautiful pass and ran through three defenders before touching down.  Evan went on to convert for two points.  Rice College did not give up and battered the Colaiste Muire defence up to the final whistle.  Colaiste Muire held out to take the honours.
Result:  Colaiste Muire 17  Rice College 8.
This is a tremendous result for Colaiste Muire in only their second year of rugby and in their first year of competitive rugby.  The contribution of all the players on the panel has been immense and special mention must go to the team captain, Jack Kelly, who led with distinction both at matches and in training.  The school now has a solid foundation to move forward with the sport and can hopefully build on this year’s success.
The Colaiste Muire panel of players and teaching and coaching staff would like to thank Crosshaven RFC for the use of the club’s facilities for both training and matches.  Gratitude is also extended to all those who purchased tickets during the school’s fundraising draw for the new team kit.
A final thanks to all those who travelled in support and who provided transport when needed.
