Richmond 18 - Crosshaven 17 Crosshaven went out of the Munster Junior Cup in a disappointing fashion away to Richmond on Sunday March 1st 2009 in the biggest upset of the round. Unfortunately for Crosshaven the J1 squad has been decimated by injury with 7/8 regular squad forwards and 3/4 backs all out due to injury. Even still Crosshaven would have fancied there chances against a Richmond team which has done reasonably well this season. It has become somewhat of an annoying occurrence that the squad seems to dip in form and health when it comes towards the end of the season and just fails to get over the finish line in various cup and league competitions.
In this match Richmond were simply the better side and were well deserved of a fine victory. A dour first half ended with the scores 3-3. Richmond had the benefit of the wind in the first half and Crosshaven would have expected to have the advantage going into the second half. Richmond however simply outmuscled Crosshaven in the second half. Michael Kelleher and Paul Wallace scored tries for Richmond and Darragh Clancy kicked a conversion and two penalties. Pierce O’Brien and Dave Hurley replied with tries for Crosshaven and Liam Delaney converted both and also added a conversion. The last Crosshaven try was scored in the last moments of the match and put a slightly flattering slant on the scoreline. The final of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup against Cashel has also been arranged for Sunday March 8th at 2.30pm with Charleville the venue. After the unfortunate couple of recent defeats it is a great once off chance to grab some silverware. Crosshaven will have their work cut out though to beat newly crowned league champions Cashel. I urge all CRFC members to come and support this match and best of luck to the entire squad and coaching team. Upcoming J1 fixtures: Sunday 8th March: Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup Final V Cashel in Charleville K.O. 1430 and Note there must be a result on the day so Extra Time and Tries may come into play. Sunday 15th March: HOME to Clonmel in the Junior League K.O. 1430. |
