Crosshaven 20 Clanwilliam 30 Saturday 21st saw the U-16 girls play Clanwilliam at home on a sunny warm day in a 7 aside match. The first half was played at quite a fast pace and resembled more a game of rugby league than rugby union, which seemed to suit the Clanwilliam girls better as they were able to get 4 trys scored in the 15 minutes of the first half compared to Crosshavens 1try. By the second half the Crosshaven girls had wised up and started to take control of the game mauling well and using the full width of the reduced size pitch to run in 3 trys in this 15 minutes as apposed to 2trys by Clanwilliam. Both sides played very good rugby which was well worth watching.
Crosshaven 34 Bandon 5 Last Saturday the 28th it was the turn of the U-18 ladies to take on Bandon in an away league match. Their last encounter was back in November when Crosshaven won at home 28--5 . This time it looked like Bandon could be up for the challenge especially when Crosshaven were down 4 of their key players. The game got off to a bit of an unnerving start with Bandon playing well into the Crosshaven 22 for the first 5 minutes until Crosshaven turned over the ball and used their backs to bring play up to the Bandon 10 meter line where following a driving maul the ball was passed out to Maria Moran who sprinted in her first try. Bandon soon regrouped following the kick off and caught the Crosshaven girls off guard to score in the corner. This would not happen again for the remainder of the match as Crosshaven became more and more focused as they took charge of the mauls with some big drives by the forwards and fantastic runs by the backs which gave Maria her second try and Alisa her first .The second half gave Crosshaven the wind in their favour and this allowed Outhalf Abbie O’Meara a few nice kicks up field to put Bandon’s defence to the test but once more Maria was able to turn on the speed gain possession of the ball and score under the posts. The conversion on this occasion was successful by Abbie. Not long after the restart the ball emerged from a ruck on the halfway line and was quickly passed out along the Crosshaven backs to winger Alisa who made great speed up along the touch line to score in the corner. Crosshavens final try only 2 minutes before full time came from a rolling maul with the honours going to Dani Malone followed by Abbie O’Mearas conversion.
We would like to congratulate our two U-18 players Aoife O’Halloran and Muireann Guilfoyle who have been selected to play for Munster this season.
The U-18s next league match is this Saturday March 7th 2009 at home to Highfield ko is 1pm and all support would be very welcome.
